Coleman was born in the Lancashire town of Blackpool. She was a student at the Arnold School in Blackpool where she was the head girl. She also scored straight A's in her A-levels. The British Soap Awards of 2009 she was awarded in the categories of Best Actress and Sexiest female and the category for Best Dramatic Acting. Coleman got a nomination in the category of Best Actress from the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor following Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role of Matt Smith. Moffat decided to choose her for the role since she seemed to have the most chemistry Smith. Also, she spoke faster than Smith.
